American Pie: Reunion Review

Ok so as I said before I’m going to write about films new and old. Just depends what comes on my TV. Today the film I’ve watched is American Pie: Reunion.

Ok so I’m 24 so American Pie is a classic to my generation. If you don’t love that film then there is definitely something wrong with you. You instantly fell in love with the characters and many of the actors then became household names. The actors and actresses have had varying careers since they shot to prominence in the first film. The cast reunited for American Pie 2 and then American Pie: The Wedding (Minus Tara Reid, Chris Klein and Mena Suvari). Where I loved American Pie 2 and Jim glueing his hand to his cock may be one of the funniest/cringest scenes I’ve ever watched. Especially when his Dad kicks off in the hospital. After those three films there was then a bunch of straight to DVD American Pies which I have never fully watched as they feature only Eugene Levy (Jims Dad) and generally look abysmal.

So back to the film. The cast are all reunited for their high school reunion. Then as usual a whole load of crazy shenanigans ensue. Kev (Thomas Ian Nicholas) and Oz (Chris Klein) are still just as annoying as they were in the originals although Oz does contribute a bit more as his girlfriend is ridiculously hot. Yet he is still really wetbag and annoying. Kev is having his usual crisis of conscience over his feelings for Vicky (Tara Reid) who by the way has regressed so much as an actress it’s actually painful to watch her. Kevs story is painfully dull and luckily the writers realise this so they minimise his and Vickys screen time.

Oz’s story on the meantime has him in an unhappy relationship and pining over his ex girlfriend Heather (Mena Suvari). Oz is again one of the boring characters as he just lacks any charisma or personality. He has a successful career as a sports commentator and his story is at least a bit interesting although completely predictable. That being said its nice to have his characters arc summed up as Oz and Heather both missed The wedding.

Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) is as usual the odd one. Claiming he has travelled the world and turns out he’s lying about it. This is reminiscent of the rumour he spread in the first film to get him laid. A plus side of his story is his love interest (Dania Ramirez).

Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) are having marital problems of their own. Michelle has lost all of her sparks and quirky traights that she had from the first two films and is now completely dull. Jim is again the focus of the plot. I’m not going to lie I would probably give into the temptation with the girl next door. The cringe moment at the beginning when Jim shuts the laptop on his cock kills every man a bit inside. The only plus of that opening was Bump N Grind playing. What a song. So many horrible things happen to this man I can’t believe he is actually potent and has had a kid.

Stiffler. Still brilliant. Sean William Scott is probably the only one out of the main cast minus Alyson Hannigan (who has had a very successful TV career) who has had a successful career. He is also still the best character in this film. Some of his one liners and classic Stiffler behaviour really send you back to how great the first two films were. There are some cringe moments with him when he’s hitting on a bunch of 18 year old girls seems a bit fucked up and a little bit sad that he hasn’t grown up at all. His revenge on the young guys though is brilliant. That being said as the film goes on he realises that he needs to grow up and the bit at the end of the film when he finally gets his revenge on Finch is actually classic.

Jims Dad was my joint favourite character in the originals. His cringe worthy awkward chats were far too close to home for us teenage guys. I’m glad my dad is nothing like him although he is one understanding Dad. He’s not his self in this film to start with as his wife has died which means he starts off a bit sombre. He picks up though when Jim reintroduces him into the world via online dating. Him getting high with Stifflers mum was funny and those two hooking up was a class idea.

I’m sorry but the MILF guys steal this movie for me. When John Cho turns up with Jim in the car his first reaction is hilarious and the MILF guys reunion at the end is hilarious. People forget this word that we use in everyday life was created in the first film. That’s how great that film was it created a word that everyone uses and that will be passed down from generation to generation. If it’s not in the dictionary at the moment then it should be.

Overall this film is not the original but it is still funny. You can’t recreate a classic and sequels never like up to the originals especially seeing all these guys are in there mid thirties now so they can’t really act too much like teenagers anymore. This film isn’t brilliant by any stretch of the imagination but it’s great to see all these characters back together for one last time and it’s nice to see them all end up happy and together. I hope this is the last one as it’s ended on the perfect note with all of their respective stories closed. That being said they have definitely left it open to make a fifth film although right now I have no idea how that could possibly go. This film has its moments  so it’s definitely worth a watch but if your new to the American Pie genre then please start with the original as that’s a classic. For pure nostalgia reasons I am going to give this film a……….
